Across its diverse subsidiaries, Blu Label operates one of South Africa’s most extensive digital distribution, payments, data, media and technology ecosystems. The Group’s operating businesses continued to focus on product innovation, platform resilience, channel expansion and disciplined cost management, while responding to a trading environment characterised by constrained consumer spending, margin pressure and evolving customer behaviour.
During the year, the Group continued to invest in the platforms, products and partnerships that support its long-term growth strategy. These investments were focused on expanding the reach of Blu Label’s virtual mall, strengthening its payment and data capabilities, deepening its customer relationships and creating new revenue opportunities in adjacent markets such as energy, transport, media, merchant enablement and digitally led generation.
The following review provides more detail on the operating performance of the core businesses in Blu Label.
Blu Label Distribution (“BLD”) is a specialist in prepaid products and the electronic distribution of virtual merchandise across South Africa. Its extensive distribution network includes banks, retailers, petroleum forecourts and other alternative channels
BLD delivered a strong performance, supported by continued face value growth and broad-based product momentum.
Growth was supported by increased customer acquisition for BluVoucher, particularly across the petroleum, financial institution and formal retail segments. Airtime continued to perform well overall, while the commercialisation of products such as Bill Payments and proprietary product distribution gained traction across key channels. The launch and roll-out of BLD’s own MNO vouchers across petroleum partners also contributed to the business’s product evolution and expansion of its platform capabilities.
The formal retail environment remained under pressure, with consumers continuing to focus spending on essentials. Integration delays at certain retail partners also affected the timing of some product launches. Despite these headwinds, BLD remains focused on expanding BluVoucher’s utilisation and adoption, increasing direct integrations with high-volume partners, commercialising BLD’s own MNO vouchers and strengthening its focus on key retailers.
Branded Vouchers remained the largest contributor to the outperformance, supported by strong growth across third-party distribution and aggregator channels. Transport ticketing performed well, while Bill Payments and Money Transfers benefited from strong channel performance and improved merchant retention.
Transaction Junction (“TJ”) is a business enablement platform offering tailored digital payment solutions for companies across a wide range of markets. The business maintained strong platform stability during the year while continuing to invest in scalability, customer onboarding, product innovation and regional expansion.
A key highlight was the development of TJ’s Car Rental Payments Platform, which combines tokenisation, incremental authorisation, reconciliation, settlement, omnichannel payments, value-added services and payment orchestration into a single solution. This has strengthened TJ’s position in the vehicle rental sector and resulted in advanced engagements with several major operators. The solution demonstrates TJ’s ability to build verticalspecific offerings that integrate multiple standalone products into a unified customer proposition.
TJ also continued to develop its settlement and aggregation capabilities. These capabilities are strategically important within the ecosystem of a key national retailer and in the broader retail market, where the ability to combine acquiring, value-added services, settlement, reconciliation and loyalty capabilities provides a differentiated platform offering. The recently concluded strategic alignment with one of South Africa’s leading consumer finance businesses further strengthens this position.
Financial performance was resilient despite delayed customer roll-outs and slower-than-anticipated lane expansion. Revenue remained ahead of the prior year, supported by growth in POS services, transaction switching, valueadded services, project-based revenue and new customer acquisitions. While some implementation activity was deferred, management remains confident that the onboarding backlog represents deferred rather than lost revenue and that these opportunities will support recurring revenue growth in FY27 and beyond.
BluNova is one of South Africa’s leading practitioners of data and decision science, providing data analytics, alternative data and data monetisation enablement capabilities to the Group and to external clients. BluNova continued to focus on supporting key customers across the Group, while developing and commercialising its GenAI, dynamic advertising and alternative data capabilities.
During FY26, BluNova made progress in stabilising and refining its operating model to enable a more integrated and seamless enablement for data monetisation across the Group. A revised three-year strategy was completed, with defined use cases across major subsidiaries have been developed and are now in testing. The business also continued to mature its POPIA compliance and information security environment, with data governance, data processing and information security remaining core strategic priorities.
The commercialisation of the AdTech dynamic advertising platform was a key milestone, although technical challenges in certain channels impacted the pace at which value could be unlocked. BluNova also advanced proof-of-concept work around alternative data monetisation, pursuing opportunities with certain Group companies and external parties. This will provide a key growth opportunity leveraging the Group’s unique data asset.
AltBureau continued to develop as a strategically important data and risk deciding capability within the Group. Its feature factory and deanonymisation workstreams are enabling structured data and predictive models to support improved reachability, collections, marketing, scoring and risk assessment use cases. Monthly enrichments continue to support internal Group clients, while external engagements are being assessed for future monetisation opportunities.
GenAI remains an emerging focus area for BluNova. These initiatives are intended to improve automation, reduce manual intervention, enhance customer engagement and improve conversion and recovery outcomes.
BluNova’s underlying focus remains clear: to provide the Group with scalable capability across data, analytics, enabling monetisation and automation that can support both internal operational performance and future external revenue opportunities.
BluAdvance provides consumers with access to short-term advances on essential services, including prepaid electricity and airtime, through a network of reseller and distribution partners.
BluAdvance continued to perform well despite a challenging second half, including inventory availability constraints, reduced municipal availability and focus into platform enhancements to support future scale and regulatory landscape changes.
The business has reached approximately 1.3 million combined consumers and continues to expand its partner ecosystem. Ten reseller channel partners are live with BluAdvance electricity advances, including three of the four mobile network operators.
BluAdvance has also progressed its product roadmap. Airtime advance has been successfully deployed and is awaiting further integration, while the white-label SaaS platform is ready for sale and provides a framework for partners, including banks, to replicate advance-type products within their own ecosystems. This is a pivotal differentiator in this space as BluAdvance separates itself from just being a platform provider. Understanding consumer behaviour and risk are key integrated components into the SaaS platform offering. The business is also evaluating adjacent opportunities in handset financing and scoring, cross-border advances, cross-border payments, water advances and voucher advances.
BluAdvance remains an important example of the Group’s ability to monetise data, using data, technology and distribution partnerships to create responsible access to essential service advances. Its priorities are to deepen partner integrations, expand customer acquisition, strengthen recoveries and grow into adjacent advanced categories.
Cigicell collaborates with municipalities, offering prepaid electricity and water vending, municipal revenue collection through Unipay and municipal revenue assurance services to enhance municipalities’ revenue streams. Cigicell delivered another strong year, supported by continued growth in revenue collection and municipal revenue assurance. The business entered the year with positive momentum and continued to perform soundly despite ongoing margin compression in the vending market
Prepaid electricity vending remained a significant contributor to the business, while Unipay continued to grow and performed well during the year. RT29 contracts also added meaningful value, with a number of municipal projects completed during the year.
Revenue assurance remains a key strategic growth area for Cigicell and is expected to become a major driver of future performance. The business has secured awards from major metros. Implementation has been initiated on one large project and SLA negotiations are nearing completion on others. Certain contracts are of particularly significant duration and potential scale. Cigicell has also developed a Municipal Playbook to guide the initiation and execution of revenue assurance contracts, improving readiness and reducing execution risk.
Cigicell’s strategic priorities remain consistent: maintaining vending as a core business, growing Unipay, expanding revenue assurance, retaining and expanding client relationships, optimising RT29 opportunities and pursuing alternative revenue sources together with Blu Energy.
The Prepaid Company (“TPC”) is a premier distributor of prepaid products for all the major South African network operators, including airtime, data and SIM cards, and is extending its offering into prepaid fibre and broader connectivity products. TPC operates in a telecommunications market that is undergoing a meaningful transition. Traditional mobile network prepaid vouchers, including airtime and data, continue to face limited growth as consumer spend remains constrained and the market shifts from pinned to PINless formats
Against this backdrop, TPC continued to protect and support its core distribution relationships while pursuing strategic initiatives with trusted aggregators. A long-term agreement was concluded with an aggregator that is consolidating procurement across several business units, supporting distribution stability and margin protection.
TPC also continued to support BLD across banking, formal retail and petroleum channels, with MNO relationships and commercials remaining central to its role in the Group. Technology remains a focus area, with work underway to reduce key-person dependencies and address redundant platforms.
TPC has also made meaningful progress in fibre. Distribution and commercial prepaid fibre agreements have been concluded with certain network operators, while sub-distribution agreements with T3TSA enable national distribution through the U-Belong Learnership Programme.
The prepaid fibre opportunity is strategically important as it diversifies TPC’s revenue base, opens access to higher-margin revenue streams and supports digital inclusion in underserved and lower-income communities. Early traction has been encouraging, although operational challenges around installation turnaround times, reporting, payment processing and agent experience require ongoing attention.
TPC is also exploring a One-Fibre Voucher solution through the BluVoucher ecosystem, enabling agents to sell prepaid vouchers that customers can redeem for fibre access. This would simplify activation, improve the customer experience and strengthen TPC’s role in the prepaid broadband ecosystem.
Blu Energy Solutions is an energy generation and trading business focused on enabling municipal and commercial energy security through wheeled power and embedded nodal solar generation. The business continued to advance this strategy during the year under review.
Blu Energy provides energy solutions across the electricity value chain, operating alongside Eskom, independent power producers (IPPs) and municipal distributors. What sets it apart is its route to market through municipalities.
Municipalities purchase about 40% of the electricity Eskom sells and resell it to households and businesses in their areas of supply. This makes municipal grids one of the largest pools of electricity demand in South Africa, and the market Blu Energy was set up to address.
Blu Energy’s nodal model places solar generation and battery storage directly at nodes on the municipal grid and sells the power to the municipality under signed power purchase agreements (PPAs). Because generation is located where power is consumed, municipalities gain additional contracted supply within their own networks. Combined with the Group’s billing, payments and revenue-management capabilities through Cigicell, this gives Blu Energy a route to municipal demand that is clearly differentiated from traditional energy procurement.
During the year, Blu Energy moved from development towards execution. Its named nodal portfolio now totals 180 MW across seven projects in three phases:
An additional 220 MW is in the origination stage. Together, these represent a Stage 1 roadmap opportunity of around 400 MW over the next three years, with further stages to follow. In FY2027, in line with the Group’s focus on execution and disciplined capital allocation, Blu Energy’s priorities are to reach financial close and begin construction on Phase 1, move Phase 2 into construction, and convert Phase 3 and the origination pipeline into contracted projects.
BLDS is a market leader in consumer data, validation, verification, data cleansing and lead creation. The business continued to refine its strategy around owning and managing the broader data value chain, with an increased focus on operational efficiency, digital lead generation and conversion performance.
BLDS delivered stable performance during the year, with the focus in the year ahead on recovery and stabilisation across the existing client base, combined with a more targeted approach to scaling call-centre revenue, and grow the VOIP revenue stream.
SMS revenue benefited from improved routing efficiencies and the migration of key clients to direct network bind integrations. These direct connections to the major mobile network operators give BLDS a distinct position in the market, enabling BLDS to pass cost savings on to clients while delivering best-in-class performance.
Data revenue growth is being supported by the expansion of internal online lead-generation capabilities.
The business is also exploring AI-enabled campaign workflow automation and chatbot-driven sales channels within the WhatsApp and Meta ecosystem. These initiatives are intended to improve targeting accuracy, campaign execution, conversion performance and profitability.
Blu Label Communications continues to provide reverse data billing, bulk messaging, managed IT services and ID technology. Reverse data remains central to the growth strategy, supported by broader enterprise demand for customer engagement solutions, data enablement and connectivity services.
Blu Label Communications remains well positioned to scale its enterprise client base and expand adjacent revenue streams in identity verification and customer engagement platforms. With a strengthened operating model, key partner relationships and continued focus on scalable technology-led solutions, the business is building towards its ambition of becoming a leading reverse data aggregator and trusted partner across fintech, gaming and enterprise connectivity
